Jesus Ascended to Heaven: Now We Must Prepare Our Hearts for the Holy Spirit

When Jesus ascended into Heaven, it was not the end of His presence with us — it was the beginning of a new mission for the Church and for every Christian soul.

The Ascension of the Lord reminds us that Jesus Christ has opened the gates of Heaven for humanity. Before ascending to the Father, He gave His disciples a promise filled with hope:

“I go to prepare a place for you.”
— John 14:2

Christ ascended into Heaven to prepare our eternal home. This beautiful promise changes the way we should live every day of our lives. As Christians, we are not simply waiting for the future — we are preparing our hearts for eternal life with God.

Jesus Did Not Leave Us Alone

After the Resurrection, Jesus spent forty days with His disciples, strengthening their faith and preparing them for the mission ahead. Then, before ascending into Heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit.

The disciples may have felt sadness watching Jesus ascend, but He gave them words of encouragement:

“And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:20

Jesus remains with His Church through the Holy Spirit, through prayer, through the Eucharist, and through His living presence in our daily lives.

The Ascension teaches us that Heaven is real. Our true home is not in this world alone. Every passing day brings us closer to meeting Christ face to face.

Pray for the Holy Spirit Every Day

After the Ascension, the Apostles gathered together in prayer while waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

This is also what we are called to do today.

We should pray daily for the Holy Spirit to enter our lives, guide our decisions, strengthen our faith, and fill our hearts with peace and joy.

The Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts that help us live as faithful followers of Christ. These gifts include:

  • wisdom
  • understanding
  • counsel
  • fortitude
  • knowledge
  • piety
  • fear of the Lord

These gifts help us remain strong during difficult times and help us grow in holiness.

The world today is often filled with anxiety, fear, anger, and confusion. Many people search for happiness in material things but continue to feel empty inside. The Holy Spirit alone can truly renew the human heart.

Saint Paul reminds us:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
— Galatians 5:22-23

When we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, our lives begin to change. We become more peaceful, more loving, and more hopeful even during suffering.

Every Day Brings Us Closer to Jesus

Many people fear growing older. Society often treats aging as something negative, but Christians are called to see life differently.

Every day we live is one day closer to eternal life with Jesus Christ.

Instead of complaining about our age, our difficulties, or the passing of time, we should thank God for the gift of each new day. Every sunrise is another opportunity to:

  • pray
  • love
  • forgive
  • grow in holiness
  • help others
  • prepare our souls for Heaven

Life on earth is temporary, but God’s promises are eternal.

The Ascension reminds us that Heaven is our goal. Jesus has already gone before us to prepare the way.

Saint Paul beautifully wrote:

“Our citizenship is in heaven.”
— Philippians 3:20

Christians should therefore live with hope, not despair.

Live with Joy and Happiness

Joy is one of the greatest signs of Christian faith.

This does not mean life will always be easy. Everyone experiences suffering, disappointment, illness, and hardship. Yet even during trials, Christians are called to live with deep inner joy because we know that Christ has conquered death.

Jesus said:

“That my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.”
— John 15:11

The world often looks for happiness in wealth, popularity, or success. But true joy comes from living close to God.

A joyful Christian becomes a witness to others. People are drawn to faith when they see peace, kindness, and hope in the lives of believers.

The saints understood this deeply. Even in suffering, they trusted God completely because they knew Heaven awaited them.

Prepare Your Soul for Heaven

The Ascension invites every Christian to reflect on an important question:

If Jesus returned today, would my heart be ready?

Preparing for Heaven is not only about avoiding sin. It is about building a relationship with God every day through:

  • prayer
  • Scripture
  • confession
  • the Eucharist
  • acts of charity
  • trust in God

Jesus calls us to remain spiritually awake and faithful.

“Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.”
— Mark 13:33

This does not mean living in fear. Instead, Christians should live with joyful expectation and confidence in God’s mercy.

The Holy Spirit Gives Strength for the Journey

Sometimes life feels heavy. Many people carry emotional pain, fears about the future, family struggles, or loneliness.

This is why Jesus promised the Holy Spirit — not to leave us weak and alone, but to strengthen us.

The Holy Spirit comforts us when we are discouraged and gives courage when we feel afraid.

Jesus told His disciples:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”
— Acts 1:8

The same Holy Spirit continues to work in the Church today.

When we pray sincerely, the Holy Spirit helps us:

  • remain faithful
  • resist temptation
  • grow in love
  • forgive others
  • trust God more deeply

The Holy Spirit transforms ordinary people into saints.

Heaven Is Our True Home

Modern life often keeps people focused only on earthly things — work, money, problems, entertainment, and worries. But the Ascension lifts our eyes toward Heaven.

Jesus did not ascend to abandon humanity. He ascended to prepare a place for us.

What a beautiful promise:
there is a home waiting for us in Heaven.

No suffering on earth lasts forever. No pain is eternal. For those who remain faithful to Christ, eternal joy awaits.

This hope gives strength even during difficult moments.

A Prayer After the Ascension

Lord Jesus Christ,
You ascended into Heaven to prepare a place for us with the Father.

Help us to live each day with faith, joy, and hope.
Send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts and fill us with Your gifts.

Teach us not to fear the passing of time,
but to see every day as a step closer to eternal life with You.

May we live with peace, love, and gratitude,
always trusting in Your promises.

Prepare our souls for Heaven
and keep us faithful until the day we meet You face to face.

Amen.
