Saint of the Day: Saint John I

On May 18, the Catholic Church honors Saint John I, a pope and martyr who courageously remained faithful to Christ during a time of political tension and persecution.

Saint John I became pope in the sixth century during the rule of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric in Italy. Although known for his wisdom and gentleness, John I faced great difficulties when tensions grew between the Eastern Roman Empire and the rulers in the West.

The king sent Pope John I on a mission to Constantinople, but after returning to Italy, the pope was falsely accused of conspiracy and imprisoned. He suffered greatly in prison because of his faithfulness and eventually died from harsh treatment around the year 526.

Saint John I is remembered as a martyr who remained loyal to the Church even during suffering and injustice. His life reminds Christians to stay faithful to God with courage, patience, and trust, even during difficult times.

Prayer

Saint John I, faithful shepherd and martyr, pray for us, that we may remain strong in our faith, trust in God during trials, and courageously witness to Christ in our daily lives. Amen.
