About Pope Saint John I
Pope Saint John I served as the 53rd Pope of the Catholic Church from A.D. 523 to 526. He guided the Church during a time of political tension under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great.
In 525, Pope John I traveled to Constantinople as an ambassador to Emperor Justin I. Although he faithfully carried out his mission, King Theodoric falsely suspected him of treason upon his return. The Pope was imprisoned in Ravenna, where he endured harsh treatment and eventually died from the effects of his imprisonment.
Because he suffered and died while faithfully fulfilling his duties as the Successor of St. Peter, the Church honors him as a martyr. His life remains a powerful witness to courage, fidelity, and unwavering trust in God.
His feast day is celebrated on May 18.
