St. Josemaría Escrivá is remembered for teaching a powerful and beautiful truth: holiness is possible in everyday life. He showed Catholics around the world that sanctity is not reserved only for priests, monks, or religious sisters, but is a calling for every person—whether at work, at home, in school, or in ordinary daily duties.
Josemaría Escrivá was born in 1902 in Barbastro, Spain. From a young age, he felt called to serve God and eventually became a priest. During years of prayer and discernment, he received the inspiration to found Opus Dei, a Catholic institution that encourages ordinary men and women to seek holiness through daily work, family life, and service.
St. Josemaría taught that even small daily tasks—answering emails, caring for children, studying, cleaning, or working—can become offerings to God when done with love and excellence. His spirituality helped millions understand that every moment can be an opportunity to grow closer to Christ.
He lived through difficult times, including the Spanish Civil War, but remained faithful and courageous. Through preaching, writing, and spiritual guidance, he inspired countless souls to pursue holiness in ordinary life.
St. Josemaría died in 1975 and was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
His message remains deeply relevant today in a busy world filled with distractions: we do not need extraordinary circumstances to become saints—we need faithfulness in ordinary life.
Reflection
St. Josemaría reminds us that holiness begins in the present moment. Every task, no matter how small, can be transformed into prayer when offered to God with love.
Ask yourself today:
How can I turn my daily work and responsibilities into an offering to God?
