Saint of the Day: Saint Junípero Serra

On July 1, the Church honors Saint Junípero Serra, a Franciscan priest and missionary whose life was dedicated to bringing the Gospel to new lands. Born in 1713 on the island of Mallorca, Spain, he entered the Franciscan Order at a young age and became known for his deep prayer life, love for Christ, and passion for evangelization.

Leaving behind the comfort of academic life, St. Junípero traveled to the New World as a missionary. He eventually helped establish a chain of missions in what is now California, where he worked tirelessly to preach the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments, and serve the spiritual and physical needs of the people.

Despite illness, long journeys, and many hardships, St. Junípero remained steadfast in his mission. His life was marked by sacrifice, perseverance, and a burning desire to lead souls to Jesus. He often endured pain and exhaustion but continued forward with trust in God’s providence.

St. Junípero Serra reminds us of the importance of missionary zeal and courage in sharing our faith. Even if we are not called to travel across the world, every Christian is called to witness to Christ through love, prayer, and service.

His example encourages us to remain faithful to our vocation and to trust that God can work powerfully through our sacrifices and efforts.

Prayer

O St. Junípero Serra, faithful missionary and servant of God, pray for us. Help us to proclaim the Gospel with courage, love, and humility.

Obtain for us the grace to persevere in faith, to trust in God’s providence, and to serve others with generous hearts. May your example inspire us to bring Christ’s love to everyone we meet.

Amen.
