On August 7, the Catholic Church honors St. Sixtus II, Pope and Martyr, together with his faithful companions who gave their lives for Christ during the persecution of the Emperor Valerian in A.D. 258.
St. Sixtus II became Pope during a difficult time when Christians faced imprisonment, torture, and death for practicing their faith. Despite the dangers, he courageously continued to shepherd the Church, celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and strengthen the faithful.
While celebrating the Sacred Mysteries in the Cemetery of St. Callistus in Rome, Pope Sixtus II was arrested by Roman soldiers. Refusing to abandon his flock or deny Christ, he was condemned to death and beheaded on August 6, A.D. 258. His feast is celebrated on August 7 together with six of his deacons and companions who also suffered martyrdom.
Among his companions was St. Felicissimus and St. Agapitus, while his beloved deacon St. Lawrence would be martyred only a few days later. According to ancient tradition, as St. Lawrence saw Pope Sixtus being led to execution, he sorrowfully asked why he was being left behind. The Pope is said to have comforted him by foretelling that Lawrence himself would soon receive the crown of martyrdom.
St. Sixtus II reminds us that true shepherds remain faithful even in times of persecution. He chose obedience to Christ over earthly safety and willingly laid down his life for the Church entrusted to his care.
His witness continues to inspire bishops, priests, deacons, and all Christians to remain steadfast in defending the Catholic faith, whatever the cost.

Prayer
O glorious St. Sixtus II, faithful Pope and courageous martyr, you shepherded the Church with wisdom and love, remaining steadfast even in the face of death.
Pray for the Holy Father, for bishops, priests, and deacons, that they may faithfully proclaim the Gospel with courage and humility.
Intercede for persecuted Christians throughout the world, especially those who suffer for the name of Jesus. Obtain for us the grace to remain faithful to Christ in every trial and never be ashamed of our Catholic faith.
May your example strengthen us to carry our crosses with hope, trusting that those who persevere with Christ will one day share in His eternal glory.
