Saint of the Day – September 3
Saint Gregory the Great was born around the year 540 into a wealthy and influential Roman family. He received an excellent education and became prefect of Rome while still a young man.
Yet Gregory discovered that worldly success could not satisfy his heart. Inspired by Christ’s call to serve God and the poor, he gave up his position, turned his family home into a monastery, and became a monk.
Later, Gregory was called back to serve the Church. He became a papal representative in Constantinople and eventually was chosen as Pope. Although he did not desire such an important position, he accepted it out of obedience to God.
As Pope, Gregory cared deeply for the poor and suffering. During times of famine and plague, he organized help for those in need and made sure that the Church’s resources were used to feed and assist the poor. He was also a tireless preacher and worked to strengthen the spiritual life of the Church.
Gregory called himself “the servant of the servants of God,” expressing his belief that true Christian leadership is rooted in humility and service.
He also encouraged sacred music and helped shape the Church’s liturgical life. Because of his great teaching and influence on the faith, he became one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church.
Saint Gregory the Great teaches us that our talents, possessions, and positions are not given to us only for ourselves. They are opportunities to serve God and help others.
A Lesson from Saint Gregory
We do not need to be powerful or famous to serve God.
Whatever our situation in life, we can serve Jesus through humility, prayer, generosity, and love for those who are suffering.
Today, let us ask Saint Gregory the Great to help us become faithful servants of Christ.
Prayer to Saint Gregory the Great
Dear Saint Gregory the Great,
faithful servant of God and shepherd of the Church,
teach us to place Jesus above the things of this world.
Help us to serve others with humility,
to care for the poor and suffering,
and to use the gifts God has given us for His glory.
When we are given responsibilities,
help us to carry them with wisdom and humility.
When we are tired or discouraged,
remind us that our work for God is never in vain.
Pray for the Holy Catholic Church,
for our priests and bishops,
for our families,
and for all those who are suffering.
Help us to become, like you,
true servants of the servants of God.
Saint Gregory the Great,
pray for us.
