Feast Day: September 17
Today, September 17, the Catholic Church honors St. Robert Bellarmine, a great Jesuit priest, bishop, theologian, and Doctor of the Church.
St. Robert Bellarmine was born on October 4, 1542, in Montepulciano, Italy. From his youth, he was deeply devoted to prayer, study, and the service of God. He eventually entered the Society of Jesus and became one of the Church’s most respected teachers and theologians.
He was especially known for his deep knowledge of Sacred Scripture, Catholic doctrine, and the teachings of the Church. His writings helped explain and defend the Catholic faith during a difficult period of division within Christianity.
Pope Clement VIII appointed Bellarmine as a theologian and entrusted him with important responsibilities in Rome. He was later made a cardinal and, in 1602, became Archbishop of Capua. As a bishop, he devoted himself to preaching, teaching, visiting parishes, and caring for the spiritual needs of his people.
Despite his many responsibilities and great learning, St. Robert sought above all to become holy. In his later years, he wrote spiritual works based on his own annual spiritual exercises. He died in Rome on September 17, 1621. Pope Pius XI canonized him in 1930 and proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1931.

- Wisdom – He used his intelligence and education in service of God.
- Humility – Despite his important positions, he continued to seek holiness rather than worldly honor.
- Prayer – His spiritual writings reveal the importance he placed on prayer and communion with God.
- Zeal for souls – As a priest and bishop, he dedicated himself to preaching and caring for God’s people.
- Love for the Church – He worked throughout his life to strengthen and teach the Catholic faithful.
What St. Robert Bellarmine Teaches Us
St. Robert reminds us that knowledge should lead us closer to God.
It is not enough to know about our faith. We are called to live our faith, pray sincerely, love our neighbor, and remain faithful to Christ.
His life also reminds us that every gift God gives us—our intelligence, talents, opportunities, and time—can become an offering to Him.
As Pope Benedict XVI explained, Bellarmine’s life showed that even great responsibilities did not prevent him from striving daily for holiness.

O glorious St. Robert Bellarmine,
faithful servant of God and devoted shepherd of souls, pray for us.
Ask Our Lord to strengthen our faith, increase our love for the truth, and help us remain faithful to the teachings of Christ and His Church.
Teach us to use the gifts God has given us for His glory and for the good of others.
Help us to grow in wisdom, humility, prayer, and charity.
When our faith is tested, obtain for us courage.
When we are confused, obtain for us wisdom.
When we become discouraged, obtain for us hope.
And when we are tempted to place worldly things before God, remind us that Heaven is our true home.
