Saint of the Day: St. Anthony Mary Claret

Feast Day: October 24

Saint Anthony Mary Claret was a zealous Catholic missionary, archbishop, and founder who dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel and bringing souls closer to Jesus Christ. Known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, he worked tirelessly to spread the Catholic faith through preaching, missionary journeys, and religious publications.

His life reminds us that every Catholic is called to share the love of Christ and help others discover the truth of the Gospel.

Biography of Saint Anthony Mary Claret

Saint Anthony Mary Claret was born on December 23, 1807, in Sallent, Catalonia, Spain. His father was a weaver, and Anthony learned the weaving trade while growing up. Although he initially considered following his father’s profession, he felt a strong calling to serve God as a priest.

He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1835. Anthony had hoped to become a Jesuit, but poor health prevented him from continuing in that direction. Instead, he devoted himself to parish ministry and missionary preaching.

Saint Anthony became known for his extraordinary zeal for the salvation of souls. He traveled through towns and villages, preaching missions, hearing confessions, and encouraging people to return to the Sacraments and live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In 1849, he founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known as the Claretians. His intention was to establish a community of missionaries who would dedicate themselves to proclaiming the Gospel and helping people grow in holiness.

In 1850, he was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba. During his years in Cuba, he worked to strengthen Catholic life, improve religious education, encourage marriage according to Church teaching, and defend the dignity of the poor and vulnerable. His ministry brought him into conflict with powerful interests, and he faced threats and an assassination attempt.

In 1857, he returned to Spain and became confessor to Queen Isabella II. Despite his responsibilities at court, he continued his missionary work and supported the spread of Catholic publications and education.

Saint Anthony also participated in the First Vatican Council, where he remained committed to the Church and her mission.

As political upheaval forced him into exile, he continued to trust in God. He died on October 24, 1870, at the Cistercian monastery of Fontfroide in France.

He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The Church celebrates his feast day on October 24.

Reflection for the Feast of Saint Anthony Mary Claret

Saint Anthony Mary Claret reminds us that sharing the Gospel is not reserved for priests and missionaries. Every Catholic can bear witness to Jesus Christ through prayer, kindness, honest work, and a willingness to speak about the faith when the opportunity arises.

Anthony used his gifts as a preacher and writer to reach people who might never have heard the Gospel proclaimed so clearly. He faced opposition and danger, yet continued his mission with courage and trust in God.

Today, let us ask ourselves: Do my words and actions lead others closer to Christ? Do I pray for those who spread the Gospel? Am I willing to share the hope of the Catholic faith with charity and humility?

Through the intercession of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, may we become more faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ and more devoted children of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
