Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast Day: September 8

Biography & Significance
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the birth of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. While the exact date of her birth is unknown, the Church has honored this feast since at least the 6th century. Tradition tells us that Mary was born to Saints Joachim and Anne, who had long prayed for a child.

Her birth is a moment of joy for the whole world because it marks the dawn of salvation. From Mary’s pure and humble life, God prepared a worthy dwelling place for His Son. Just as the morning star announces the rising sun, so Mary’s birth heralds the coming of Christ, the Light of the world.

This feast reminds us of God’s providence, His faithfulness to His promises, and the special role of Mary in His plan of salvation.

Reflection: As we celebrate Mary’s nativity, we are invited to imitate her humility, obedience, and openness to God’s will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we rejoice in the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
through whom You gave the world its Savior.
Grant that we may follow her example of faith and purity,
and come to share in the joy of eternal life.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
