Finding the Living Spring in Scripture

What are your basic needs? Any source will tell you that the basic human needs are air, water, food, shelter, and sleep. Perhaps the flesh can survive at the bare minimum with these things alone, and many people do. How many of us have wandered through this live only feeding the basics, still thirsty for the great potential our hopes and dreams once were? No matter what stage in your walk of life, age, or background, the springs of the Living Water are waiting for you. If you have been getting by with water alone for your flesh, then let the springs of your spirit over flow. The Word of God is the only way to clench that thirst that lingers in your soul.

Water flows in a cycle. From rain to the earth, into the sky, and around again it goes. Just so, our relationship with the Heavenly Father is a cycle of continued communication. To turn the tap on the Living Spring we must maintain our end of the bargain. God sent the tools and prepared the path—we need only turn to He that created us to find the way to eternity: the Living Waters. One way to do this is by identifying the Living Spring in scripture. God is not subtle, and He doesn’t play games with our hearts. He has left clear visuals and details that He wants us to find as we study. Let’s look at some of the many references to His life-giving water.

Isaiah 58:11

“The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

What is a well-watered garden like? Imagine: blooming flowers, fruitful trees, vibrant colors, and refreshing smells. You are His wonderful creation that He strives to care for just as a good steward cares for his earthly garden. Just like this quote from Phil Mitchell, “Dreams keep us growing, dreams keep us alive, do not let your dreams die.” The better you maintain and water this garden of your soul, you will continue to grow!

Psalm 1:3

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.”

Consider the fruit of a tree that is malnourished and deserted. It isn’t appealing or nutritious. But when given water and love, it will flourish. When filled with waters from the Living Spring, your soul will flourish and prosper.

Psalm 104:10

“He makes springs pour water into the ravines, it flows between the mountains.”

“Build up your relationship with God, He is a living spring that walks and nourishes us.”—Phil Mitchell

A spring flows, and with it comes life: nourishing water for plants, animals, and people. It is not surprise that more civilizations were build along sources of water: water is life.

Isaiah 44:1-4

““But now listen, Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen. This is what the LORD says— He who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.”

Jeshurun is a poetic name that refers to Israel. Its literal translation means, “upright one”. As we follow God’s ways and learn to walk in Him and drink the water that He guides us too, we will become upright and blessed in His sight. He has promised to pour His Spirit onto us. Let these blessing flow in your own life and you follow in obedience.

John 4:10

“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and He would have given you living water.””

This is a powerful verse from the story of the Woman at the Well. When Jesus treats this woman with respect and teaching, she flourishes and goes forth to share the news of the Living Water. Her testimony, though simple, is true. The truth in the Living Water—the Holy Spirit of Jesus—will set you free.

Psalm 23:2

“He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters…”

Imagine radiant green fields of grass and frolicking sheep. There are no wolves at the fence snarling in hopes of a meal, no serpents slithering in to stir trouble. Beside the green pastures and quiet waters of the Living Spring, God restores and refreshed the soul with His healing powers. Let forgiveness flood your soul and the hope of His good will bring you to new life.

Revelation: 22: 1-2

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lambdown the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”

“The Galaxy was created for life, it is up to us to help preserve it” –Phil Mitchell

From the beginning of time itself, God intended to has a strong relationship with His divine creation. We are each made in His Holy image. It is up to us to maintain care and love of the gift He has given to us. But, He does not leave us alone in this responsibility. He goes before us and with the Holy Spirit guides us along the way.

Embracing the Living Spring

God doesn’t want us to live idle lives, only reflecting on Him when we walk into the Church each week. Daily, we must seek His Face.  The Lord has a journey for each person to take in spirit in order to find a strong bond with Him. Phil Mitchell, author of “The Living Spring”, shares his journey through these waters and shares this inspirational quest in his book. Moving forward in your relationship with God, take the promise of the Living Spring with you whoever you go. The church is not just a building: it is the Body of Christ, which “the church should stand for all the positions that the church stands for…” and we will learn these things to stand for and grow on as we let the waters of His love and healing flow in our daily lives.
