About Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, S.J.
Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, S.J. was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico. From an early age, he displayed a joyful personality, deep compassion, and a desire to serve God. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and prepared for the priesthood during a time of intense anti-Catholic persecution in Mexico.
Ordained a priest in 1925, Father Pro secretly returned to Mexico when public worship and priestly ministry were severely restricted under the Calles Law. Risking his life each day, he celebrated Mass in private homes, heard confessions, administered the sacraments, and brought comfort to Catholics forced to practice their faith in secret.
In 1927, although innocent of the crime for which he was accused, Father Pro was arrested without trial and sentenced to death. On November 23, 1927, he faced the firing squad with remarkable peace and forgiveness. Refusing a blindfold, he stretched out his arms in the form of a cross, held a crucifix and a rosary, and proclaimed his final words:
“¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (“Long live Christ the King!”)
His courageous martyrdom inspired countless Catholics throughout the world.
On September 25, 1988, Pope St. John Paul II beatified Miguel Pro, recognizing him as a martyr who gave his life out of hatred for the Catholic faith (odium fidei).
His feast day is celebrated each year on November 23.
