Why Do Catholics Pray to Saints?

A Catholic Teaching Explained

Many Christians wonder why Catholics pray to the saints. Do Catholics “worship” saints? Do we think saints replace Jesus? The Catholic Church has always taught clearly: we worship God alone, but we honor the saints and ask for their intercession, just as we ask holy people on earth to pray for us.

Here is the Catholic teaching, step by step.

1. Only God Is Worshiped

Catholics adore and worship God alone Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This worship is called latria.

Saints do not receive worship. They receive honor (called dulia) because they are God’s faithful friends who lived heroic holiness. The Blessed Virgin Mary receives a unique honor (hyperdulia), but still not worship.

2. The Communion of Saints

Catholics believe in the Communion of Saints, a biblical truth professed in the Apostles’ Creed.
It means that all who belong to Christ in heaven, on earth, or in purgatory are united as one family in Him.

Death does not destroy this unity.
The saints in heaven are alive in Christ, and Scripture says:

  • “He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” (Mark 12:27)
  • “We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Since they are alive in Christ, they can pray for us, and their prayers are powerful.

3. Asking Saints for Intercession Is Biblical

Catholics do not pray to saints as gods we ask them to pray for us.

This is the same as asking a friend, “Please pray for me.”
Scripture encourages believers to pray for one another:

  • “Pray for one another… the prayer of a righteous man has great power.” (James 5:16)

If the prayers of holy people on earth are powerful, how much more the prayers of holy people in heaven, perfectly united to God?

Revelation also shows saints presenting our prayers to God:

  • “The prayers of the saints rose before God.” (Revelation 8:4)

This is intercession not worship.

4. Saints Lead Us Closer to Christ

When Catholics ask saints for their intercession, they are doing exactly what the saints want:
to bring souls to Jesus.

Saints are models of virtue. Their lives inspire us to follow Christ more faithfully. They help us grow in holiness, courage, purity, humility, and perseverance.

5. Jesus Himself Encourages Intercession

The Gospel shows that Jesus responds to intercession:

  • At Cana, Jesus performs His first miracle because of Mary’s intercession (John 2:1–11).
  • People bring others to Jesus for healing and Jesus grants their requests because of their faith.

Intercession is part of God’s design.

6. Praying with the Saints Makes the Church Whole

When we pray with the saints, we unite the Church:

  • The Church on earth
  • The souls being purified
  • The saints in heaven

This is the family of God praying together.

In Summary

Catholics pray to the saints because:

✔ We honor them, not worship them
✔ They are alive in Christ
✔ Scripture shows the power of intercession
✔ Saints present our prayers to God
✔ They help us grow closer to Jesus
✔ The Communion of Saints is a biblical truth

All Christian prayer flows through Jesus Christ, the one Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5).
The saints simply help us reach Him.
