What were the secrets of our lady of la salette?
On September 19, 1846, in the small mountain village of La Salette-Fallavaux in the French Alps, two shepherd children—14-year-old Mélanie Calvat and 11-year-old Maximin Giraud—witnessed a beautiful Lady sitting on a rock, weeping. Dressed in radiant white with a shimmering glow and holding a broken rosary, she spoke to them in both French and their local patois:
“Come near my children, do not be afraid; I am here to tell you a great secret. If my people do not repent, a terrible famine will come. … Tell them to celebrate my feast on this mountain, that they may find mercy.”
She lamented how people ignored God’s law—working on Sundays, blaspheming, and failing to observe fasting and penance—and warned that unless they turned back to God, floods, famine, and cholera would afflict the land.
After giving them these messages, the Lady vanished into a bright light. The Church investigated, approved the apparition in 1851, and promoted a devotion marked by penitence, conversion, and maternal compassion.
