Saint Crispin of Viterbo
Saint Crispin of Viterbo (1668–1750) was born Pietro Fioretti in Viterbo, Italy. At the age of twenty-five, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, where he served faithfully for more than forty years as a gardener, cook, infirmarian, and beggar for the monastery.
Although his duties were simple, he performed them with extraordinary joy, humility, and love for God. He became well known for comforting the sick, helping the poor, encouraging sinners to return to the faith, and promoting devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
His joyful greeting, “Deo gratias” (“Thanks be to God”), reflected the gratitude that filled his heart throughout his life.
He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
His feast day is celebrated on May 19.
