What is St. Francis known for?
St. Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226) was the son of a wealthy merchant in Italy who renounced his riches to live a life of radical poverty and simplicity. He embraced the Gospel with joy, preaching peace, humility, and love for all of God’s creation. Founder of the Franciscan Order, he inspired countless men and women to follow Christ more closely. Known as the patron saint of animals and ecology, Francis saw all creatures as his brothers and sisters. He bore the stigmata, sharing in the wounds of Christ, and is remembered as one of the most beloved saints in the Church.
