Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified (Saint Mariam Baouardy) (1846–1878)

Catholic Saint from the Holy Land

Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified was originally from the village of Ibillin (Ibelin) in Galilee, not far from Nazareth, in the Holy Land. Her birth name was Mariam Baouardy. Orphaned at a young age, she lived a life marked by poverty, suffering, and deep trust in God.

She later became a Discalced Carmelite nun, known for her profound humility, intense love for Jesus Crucified, and rich life of prayer. Though uneducated, her simple faith and total surrender allowed God to work powerfully through her life.

Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified had a deep devotion to the Holy Spirit and played an important role in the foundation of the Carmelite monastery in Bethlehem, where her legacy remains alive today.

She was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, becoming one of the great saints of the Holy Land.

Her life reminds us that true holiness is found in humility, trust, and complete surrender to God’s will.
