Origins of the Feast and Devotion
July Devotion: Because the feast falls at the very start of July, many dioceses and religious communities expand the celebration into a month‑long devotion, calling the faithful to meditate on Christ’s sacrificial offering.
Early Roots: From the earliest days, Christians treasured the Eucharist as the Blood of Christ (cf. 1 Cor 11:25). Medieval mystics such as St. Gertrude the Great (13th c.) and St. Mechtilde of Hackeborn received visions emphasizing the power of Christ’s Blood for healing and mercy.
Feast Institution: In 1849, amid political turmoil in Rome, Pope Pius IX established the Feast of the Most Precious Blood on July 1, seeking spiritual protection for the Church. In 1933, Pope Pius XI extended it to the universal calendar.
