About Our Lady of Good Counsel
The devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel is closely connected with the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in the town of Genazzano, Italy. Under this beautiful title, Catholics turn to Mary as a loving Mother and ask her to obtain from her Divine Son the wisdom, grace, and guidance needed to follow God’s will.
The devotion has its roots in an ancient tradition associated with Genazzano, where a sacred image of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Mother of Good Counsel has been honored for centuries. According to the longstanding tradition, the image appeared miraculously in the church of the Augustinian Fathers in Genazzano on April 26, 1467. The devotion subsequently spread throughout the Catholic world.
Our Lady of Good Counsel is especially invoked by those who face difficult decisions, uncertainty, temptation, family problems, or important choices in life. Catholics do not turn to Mary apart from Christ; rather, they ask her maternal intercession so that she may lead them more faithfully to her Divine Son.
The title “Good Counsel” reminds us of Mary’s words at Cana: “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5) These words beautifully express Mary’s role. She directs our hearts away from ourselves and toward Jesus, teaching us to trust His wisdom and obey His commandments.
The Church has long honored the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of Divine Grace and a powerful intercessor for the faithful. Through this novena, Catholics ask Our Lady of Good Counsel to enlighten the mind, strengthen the will, protect us from error and sin, and obtain for us the grace to choose what is pleasing to God.
This traditional novena is therefore a prayer of guidance, wisdom, protection, and trust in Divine Providence. As we pray each day, we place our uncertainties and intentions into the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking her to guide us safely along the path that leads to Christ and eternal life.
