This feast celebrates Mary’s intercession through the Rosary, a powerful prayer reflecting on the life of Christ. It was established after the Christian victory at Lepanto in 1571, attributed to the Rosary’s power.
On October 7, 1571, the Christian fleet, led by Don Juan of Austria, won a decisive naval battle against the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto (in the Gulf of Patras, Greece). Facing overwhelming odds, the Christian forces prayed the Rosary for victory, trusting in the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The victory was so decisive that it halted Ottoman expansion into Europe, and Pope Pius V credited the triumph to the power of the Rosary. In gratitude, he established October 7 as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, a day for Catholics to honor Mary and seek her intercession through this powerful prayer.
Reflection
The Battle of Lepanto reminds us that prayer, especially the Rosary, is a spiritual weapon. Just as the faithful prayed for divine assistance in 1571, we too are called to turn to Mary in times of struggle, trusting in God’s providence.
Prayer
O Blessed Mother, help us to trust in your intercession as we face life’s battles. May the Rosary guide and protect us, as it did for the faithful at Lepanto. Amen.
