Today the Catholic Church celebrates Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars, a Spanish religious sister who dedicated her life to caring for the elderly and abandoned.
Born on January 9, 1843, in Aitona, Spain, Teresa grew up in a devout Catholic family. She became a teacher and later felt called to a life of religious service.
In 1873, together with Father Saturnino López Novoa, she founded the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly, an order devoted to caring for elderly people who had no one else to help them.
Saint Teresa believed that every elderly person deserved to be treated with dignity, love, and compassion. She and her sisters welcomed the poor and abandoned, caring for them not simply as people in need, but as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Under her leadership, the congregation spread throughout Spain and eventually to other countries. Teresa remained humble and focused on serving God through the people entrusted to her care.
She died on August 26, 1897, at the age of 54.
Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1974. She is the patron saint of elderly people and of those who care for them.
A Lesson from Saint Teresa
Saint Teresa reminds us that no person is forgotten in the eyes of God.
The elderly, the lonely, the poor, and those who feel abandoned can sometimes become invisible to the world. Saint Teresa teaches us to see them with the eyes of Christ.
Her life also reminds us that holiness does not always require extraordinary accomplishments. Sometimes holiness means simply being present, serving faithfully, and loving someone who needs us.
Today, let us ask Saint Teresa to help us recognize those around us who may be lonely or forgotten and to respond to them with patience, kindness, and love.

you devoted your life to caring for the elderly, the poor, and the abandoned.
Teach us to see Christ in every person,

and to give generously without seeking recognition.
Pray for elderly people throughout the world,
especially those who have no family or anyone to care for them.
Ask Jesus to give us compassionate hearts
and the courage to bring His love to those most in need.
