About Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a Marian title that highlights the unique relationship between the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion teaches that Mary, chosen by God to be the Mother of Christ, lovingly brings the prayers of the faithful to her Son and encourages all people to place their trust in His infinite mercy.
This devotion was especially promoted in the nineteenth century by Fr. Jules Chevalier, M.S.C. (1824–1907), founder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who desired to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the maternal intercession of Mary. The title does not suggest that Mary replaces Christ but rather points believers to Him, helping them draw closer to His Sacred Heart.
Today, devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is practiced throughout the world, inspiring Catholics to deepen their love for Jesus, pray with confidence, and live lives of charity, hope, and peace. The feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is celebrated in many places on the Friday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, though the date may vary by local calendar.
