About St. Angela Merici
St. Angela Merici (1474–1540) was born in Desenzano del Garda, Italy. From her youth, she had a deep love for prayer and a strong desire to serve God and others. After experiencing personal hardships, she devoted herself to works of charity and the spiritual formation of those around her.
Angela recognized the great need for the education of young women, especially in Christian faith and moral formation. At a time when many girls had limited opportunities for education, she courageously began teaching and gathering women who shared her mission.
In 1535, she founded the Company of St. Ursula, later known as the Ursuline Sisters, a community dedicated to the education and spiritual formation of girls. Her vision transformed Catholic education and continues to influence schools and ministries throughout the world.
St. Angela was known for her wisdom, humility, patience, and joyful trust in God. She was canonized by Pope Pius VII in 1807.
