About St. Barnabas
St. Barnabas was one of the first Christians and a respected leader in the early Church. Although he was not one of the Twelve Apostles, he is honored as an Apostle because of his extraordinary missionary work and his role in spreading the Gospel.
Originally named Joseph, he was a Levite from the island of Cyprus. The Apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36), because of his generosity and ability to strengthen others in the faith.
St. Barnabas sold his property and gave the proceeds to the Apostles to help the poor. He welcomed St. Paul after Paul’s conversion, introducing him to the Christian community when many were still afraid of him. Together they traveled on missionary journeys, preaching Christ throughout the Roman world.
According to tradition, St. Barnabas was later martyred in Cyprus for his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.
His feast day is celebrated on June 11.
