About St. Claude de la Colombière
St. Claude de la Colombière (1641–1682) was a French Jesuit priest, renowned preacher, and devoted servant of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He is best known as the spiritual director of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom Christ revealed the now-famous devotion to His Sacred Heart. Recognizing the authenticity of her mystical experiences, St. Claude courageously defended and promoted this devotion, helping it spread throughout the Church.
Known for his humility, trust in God’s mercy, and fidelity to his priestly vocation, St. Claude also served as chaplain to the Duchess of York in England, where he endured imprisonment because of anti-Catholic persecution before returning to France due to poor health.
Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1992, St. Claude is remembered as a model of confidence in God’s love and mercy. His life encourages Catholics to abandon themselves completely to God’s will and to trust in the infinite compassion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
