What is St. Junipero known for?
St. Junípero Serra (1713–1784) was a Spanish Franciscan priest who led the founding of nine missions along California’s coast between 1769 and 1782. Born on the island of Mallorca, he joined the Franciscan Order at seventeen and felt a profound calling to missionary work. Arriving in Mexico in 1749, Serra learned the local languages and customs, then traveled north to Alta California. There he baptized tens of thousands of Indigenous people, established communities centered on the sacramental life, education, and agriculture, and secured water and food sources for mission towns. Though his methods reflected the complexities of his era, Serra’s deep prayer life and commitment to the poor and native populations inspired lasting faith communities. Canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, he is remembered for his zeal in spreading the Gospel and his perseverance amid hardship.
