St. Alphonsus Liguori

Patron of: Confessors, moral theologians, and arthritis sufferers
St. Alphonsus Liguori was an Italian bishop, theologian, and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). Born near Naples in 1696, he was a brilliant lawyer by the age of 19 but left the legal profession after a spiritual awakening, choosing instead to serve God.
Ordained a priest in 1726, Alphonsus had a deep compassion for the poor, the sick, and the spiritually lost. He preached parish missions, heard countless confessions, and wrote over 100 spiritual and theological works, including The Glories of Mary and Moral Theology, which became a cornerstone of Catholic teaching.
St. Alphonsus emphasized God’s mercy and the importance of prayer, especially devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Blessed Sacrament. Despite suffering from severe arthritis later in life, he remained faithful in service until his death in 1787.
He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871 for his contributions to Catholic moral theology and spirituality.
