What is St. Apollonia known for?
St. Apollonia was a holy Christian virgin and martyr who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, in the 3rd century. During a violent persecution of Christians under the Roman emperor Decius, she was seized by a mob who tried to force her to renounce her faith. When she refused, they beat her and knocked out all of her teeth.
Despite her intense suffering, Apollonia remained steadfast in her love for Christ. According to tradition, rather than betray her faith, she willingly embraced martyrdom, leaping into the flames that her persecutors had prepared for her.
Her courage and witness have made her a powerful intercessor for those in pain—especially those suffering from dental problems. St. Apollonia is a shining example of strength, purity, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
