About St. Charbel
St. Charbel Makhlouf (1828–1898) was born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in a small village in modern‑day Lebanon. At age 23 he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order at the Monastery of St. Maron and took the name Charbel, after a 2nd‑century martyr. Known for his intense asceticism, Charbel spent 16 years in communal life before retreating to a hermit’s cell, where he lived 23 years of silent prayer, manual labor, and Eucharistic adoration.
Despite his obscurity in life, reports of miraculous healings at his tomb began soon after his death. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1977. St. Charbel’s life of solitude and holiness continues to draw pilgrims seeking spiritual renewal and physical healing through his intercession.
