About St. Damien Molokai
St. Damien of Molokai (1840–1889), born Joseph De Veuster in Belgium, joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and volunteered in 1864 to serve in the Hawaiian Islands. Assigned to the leper colony on Moloka‘i’s Kalaupapa peninsula, he lived among those afflicted with Hansen’s disease, ministering to their physical and spiritual needs. Father Damien built homes, schools, and churches, provided medical care, and celebrated Mass and the sacraments with boundless compassion. Contracting the disease himself, he continued his work until his death at age 49. Canonized in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI, St. Damien’s life is a testament to Christ’s call to love and serve “the least of these.”
