About St. Edmund Campion
St. Edmund Campion (1540–1581) was an English Jesuit priest, scholar, and one of the most celebrated martyrs of the English Reformation. Born in London, he was an exceptionally gifted student who studied at Oxford University and initially gained favor under Queen Elizabeth I.
After embracing the Catholic faith, Campion left England to study for the priesthood in Douai and later joined the Society of Jesus. In 1580, he secretly returned to England to minister to persecuted Catholics, celebrating the sacraments and strengthening the faithful despite the constant threat of arrest.
His famous work, known as “Campion’s Brag,” boldly defended his mission and proclaimed his loyalty to Christ and the Catholic faith. Eventually captured, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, tortured, and tried on false charges of treason. Throughout his suffering, he steadfastly professed his innocence and his devotion to Jesus Christ and the Church.
On December 1, 1581, St. Edmund Campion was executed at Tyburn, becoming one of England’s greatest martyrs. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Today, he is remembered as a model of courage, fidelity, and unwavering trust in God amid persecution.
