About St. Elizabeth of Hungary
St. Elizabeth of Hungary was born in 1207 into the Hungarian royal family. As a young girl, she was sent to the court of Thuringia in present-day Germany, where she later married Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia. Their marriage was known for its deep love, faith, and devotion to God.
Elizabeth became widely admired for her remarkable charity. She generously gave food, clothing, and money to the poor, personally cared for the sick, and founded a hospital where she served those in need with her own hands. Following the death of her husband during the Sixth Crusade, she embraced a life of greater poverty and dedicated herself entirely to prayer and works of mercy.
St. Elizabeth died on November 17, 1231, at just 24 years of age. Because of her holiness and the many miracles attributed to her intercession, she was canonized only four years later, in 1235, by Pope Gregory IX.
Today, St. Elizabeth of Hungary is the patron saint of charities, hospitals, nurses, bakers, widows, the homeless, and the poor. Her feast day is celebrated on November 17.
