St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850–1917), born in Lombardy, Italy, was the youngest of thirteen children. Though she longed for missionary work in China, Pope Leo XIII called her to serve the needs of Italian immigrants in the United States. In 1889, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, establishing schools, orphanages, and hospitals across New York, Chicago, and beyond. Known for her boundless charity and trust in Divine Providence, Mother Cabrini worked tirelessly to comfort the poor and displaced, earning her the title “Mother” to thousands. She became the first American citizen canonized by the Church in 1946. Her legacy endures in the dozens of institutions she founded and in her unwavering love for the marginalized.
