About St. Gregory the Great
St. Gregory the Great (c. 540–604) served as Pope from 590 until his death and is one of only a few popes honored with the title “the Great.” Before becoming pope, he lived as a monk, embracing a life of prayer and simplicity. His deep spirituality shaped his leadership and inspired generations of Christians.
As pope, St. Gregory cared for the poor, strengthened missionary work, promoted liturgical reform, and encouraged faithful preaching throughout the Church. He is closely associated with the development of Gregorian Chant, although modern scholarship indicates that the chant tradition evolved over time and was later named in his honor because of his influence on the Church’s liturgy.
St. Gregory wrote many important spiritual works, including the Pastoral Rule and Dialogues, which continue to guide bishops, priests, and lay Catholics. He was declared a Doctor of the Church for his lasting contributions to Catholic theology and pastoral ministry. His feast day is celebrated on September 3.
