What is St. Isaac Jogues known for?
St. Isaac Jogues (1607–1646) was a French Jesuit priest and one of the first missionary martyrs in North America. After arriving in New France (present‑day Canada) in 1636, he learned local Indigenous languages and bravely shared the Gospel among the Huron and other tribes. Captured by the Iroquois in 1642, he endured brutal torture but forgave his captors and was ransomed. Returning to France briefly, he chose to go back to minister to the very people who had mistreated him. In 1646, he was martyred on the shore of Lake Ontario while bringing Communion to a sick Iroquois chief. His self‑sacrificial love and forgiveness exemplify Christ’s call to lay down one’s life for others. Canonized in 1930, St. Isaac Jogues stands as a model of courage, compassion, and missionary zeal.
