About St. John the Apostle

St. John the Apostle, also known as St. John the Evangelist, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ and the brother of St. James the Greater. Together with Peter and James, John formed Christ’s inner circle and witnessed many of the most important moments of His earthly ministry, including the Transfiguration, the Agony in the Garden, and the Crucifixion.

John is known as the Beloved Disciple because of his close relationship with Jesus. At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted His Blessed Mother to John’s care, saying, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:26–27). After the Resurrection, John faithfully preached the Gospel, helped lead the early Church, and later wrote the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation.

Unlike the other Apostles, St. John is traditionally believed to have died a natural death after many years of faithful service, making him the only Apostle not to suffer martyrdom. His writings continually emphasize God’s love, truth, and the call to remain faithful to Christ.

O glorious Apostle, who, on account of your virginal purity, were so beloved by Jesus as to deserve to lay your head upon His Divine Breast and to be entrusted, in His place, with the care of His Most Holy Mother:

I beg you to inflame my heart with a most ardent love for Jesus and Mary.

Obtain for me from our Lord the grace that I, too, with a heart purified from earthly affections, may be made worthy to remain ever united to Jesus as His faithful disciple, and to Mary as her devoted child, both here on earth and eternally in heaven.
