What is St. Luke known for?
About St. Luke
St. Luke was a Gentile physician from Antioch whom Saint Paul affectionately calls “the beloved physician” (Col 4:14). He first joins Paul’s missionary team in Troas (Acts 16:10) and travels with him on many apostolic journeys, offering both medical care and spiritual support to early Christian communities.
Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Luke composed the Gospel according to Luke—the most detailed account of Our Lord’s birth, ministry, parables, and compassion for the poor and outcast—and the Acts of the Apostles, tracing the Church’s growth from Jerusalem to Rome. His physician’s eye for detail is evident in his precise descriptions of Christ’s healings, the journeys of Paul, and the workings of the early Church.
Luke’s life exemplifies the harmony of science and faith: he healed bodies in Christ’s name and nourished souls with the Good News. Tradition holds that he later evangelized in Greece and was martyred at age ninety-four.
