About St. Marguerite Bourgeoys
St. Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620–1700) was born in Troyes, France. Inspired by a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, she accepted God’s call to travel to the French colony of Ville-Marie (present-day Montreal, Canada), where she became a pioneer of Catholic education.
She founded the Congregation of Notre Dame, a religious community dedicated to educating children, especially young girls, and serving families throughout New France. Unlike many religious communities of her time, her sisters lived an active apostolic life among the people rather than in enclosure.
St. Marguerite was known for her humility, unwavering trust in Divine Providence, love for the Holy Eucharist, and tender devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her lifelong mission helped establish Catholic education in Canada and inspired generations of teachers and missionaries.
She was canonized by Pope St. John Paul II in 1982.
