About St. Marianne Cope
Born in 1838 in Heppenheim, Germany (emigrating as an infant to Utica, New York), Marianne Cope entered the Sisters of St. Francis at age 23. For nearly 25 years she led schools and orphanages across central New York, becoming Mother Superior in 1882. Responding to a plea from King Kalākaua of Hawai‘i, she and six sisters volunteered in 1883 to serve those afflicted with Hansen’s disease on the remote island of Moloka‘i. There, Mother Marianne transformed care at the Kalaupapa settlement—bringing compassionate nursing, clean facilities, and spiritual comfort—serving side by side with St. Damien. She lived among her patients, teaching them dignity in suffering and unwavering trust in Divine Providence. She died in 1918 and was canonized in 2012, honored for her self‑sacrificing love and tireless advocacy for society’s most marginalized.
