What is St. Martha known for?
St. Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, was a beloved friend of Jesus. She lived in Bethany, a small town near Jerusalem, where she welcomed Jesus into her home with warmth and hospitality. The Gospels show us a woman of deep faith, strong personality, and a servant’s heart.
In Luke 10:38–42, we see Martha busy with the tasks of serving while her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, listening. Martha’s frustration is understandable and very human — she wanted everything to be perfect for the Lord. But Jesus gently reminded her that while her service was good, Mary had chosen “the better part,” reminding us all to balance action with contemplation.
Martha’s great moment of faith comes in John 11, when her brother Lazarus dies. Even in her grief, she says to Jesus: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died… But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus reveals to her one of the most powerful truths in Scripture: “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”Martha believes — and her faith is rewarded when Lazarus is raised from the dead.
St. Martha reminds us that love for God is shown not only through prayer but also through service. Her example teaches us to welcome Christ into our homes, serve Him with love, and trust Him even in the face of sorrow.
