About Saint Teresa of Calcutta
Saint Teresa of Calcutta was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje. From a young age, she felt called to dedicate her life completely to God. She joined the Sisters of Loreto and later traveled to Kolkata, where she began her mission of teaching and serving the poor.
In 1946, she experienced what she called a “call within a call,” in which Jesus invited her to leave the convent school and serve “the poorest of the poor.” In response, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, a religious community dedicated to caring for the hungry, abandoned, sick, and dying.
Mother Teresa became known throughout the world for her humility, radical charity, and unwavering devotion to Christ. She taught that great holiness is found in small acts done with great love. Despite experiencing deep spiritual trials, she remained faithful to her mission.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta died in 1997 and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. Today, she remains one of the most beloved modern saints and a powerful witness of Christ’s mercy.
