About St. Oliver Plunkett
St. Oliver Plunkett (1625–1681) was an Irish archbishop, missionary, and martyr who served as the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.
Born in County Meath, Ireland, Oliver studied for the priesthood in Rome because of the persecution of Catholics in Ireland. After his ordination, he returned to serve the faithful and was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669.
During a period of intense religious persecution, St. Oliver worked tirelessly to restore the Catholic faith, strengthen priests, and care for his people. Despite false accusations and imprisonment, he remained peaceful, forgiving, and faithful to Christ.
He was executed in England on July 1, 1681, becoming the last Catholic martyr to die in England. Before his death, he forgave those who had falsely accused him and prayed for his enemies.
St. Oliver Plunkett was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975 and is honored as the patron saint of peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
His feast day is celebrated on July 1.
