About St. Raymond of Peñafort
St. Raymond of Peñafort (1175–1275) was a Dominican priest, renowned canon lawyer, and one of the greatest scholars of the medieval Church. Born in Catalonia, Spain, he entered the Dominican Order after a distinguished academic career and dedicated his life to preaching, teaching, and the administration of the Sacrament of Penance.
At the request of Pope Gregory IX, St. Raymond compiled the Decretals, an authoritative collection of canon law that served the Church for centuries. He also encouraged the study of Arabic and Hebrew so missionaries could better proclaim the Gospel, especially among Muslims and Jews.
One of the best-known stories about St. Raymond tells how, after rebuking King James I of Aragon for immoral conduct, he was refused passage home. Trusting in God, he spread his cloak upon the sea, used his staff as a mast, and miraculously sailed from the island of Majorca to Barcelona.
St. Raymond lived to the remarkable age of one hundred years and was known for his wisdom, humility, love of confession, and zeal for the salvation of souls.
