St. Roch Novena Prayer

What is St. Roch known for?

St. Roch was born in the 14th century in Montpellier, France, to a wealthy and devout family. From a young age, he showed deep love for prayer, fasting, and helping the poor. After the death of his parents, he gave away all his possessions and set out on a pilgrimage to Rome.

During his journey, a terrible plague broke out in Italy. St. Roch devoted himself to caring for the sick, miraculously healing many by making the Sign of the Cross. Eventually, he too contracted the plague and withdrew to the forest to die. According to tradition, a dog brought him bread daily and licked his wounds, which began to heal. This is why St. Roch is often pictured with a dog by his side.

He later returned home, unrecognized, and was wrongly imprisoned. He died in obscurity, but his identity and sanctity were revealed after his death. Devotion to St. Roch quickly spread across Europe, especially during times of plague and disease.

He is a powerful intercessor in times of illness and suffering, reminding us of the Christian call to charity, humility, and trust in God’s mercy.

Day 1 – St. Roch Novena

O Blessed St. Roch, Patron of the sick, have pity on those who lie upon a bed of suffering. Your power was so great when you were in this world, that by the sign of the Cross, many were healed of their diseases. Now that you are in heaven, your power is no less. Offer to God our sighs and tears and obtain for us the physical and spiritual health we seek…

St Roch, I pray that I be granted the strength to overcome my afflictions and sins. I okay that my special someone and I be granted the wisdom and grace to understand your will. Embrace her, comfort her, give her the happiness and joy that she deserves. Grant her the strength to forgive and carry the torch for us while I recover. In Jesus name, Amen.

St. Roch, thank you for your intercession. My dog passed away peacefully with me by side and I believe a host of angels keeping watch. Thank you, Lord!
