About St. Rose of Lima
St. Rose of Lima (1586–1617) was born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru. Because of her extraordinary beauty, she was given the nickname “Rose,” a name that remained with her throughout her life. From a young age, she developed a deep love for Jesus Christ and chose a life of prayer, sacrifice, and charity.
As a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic, St. Rose devoted herself to caring for the poor, the sick, and those most in need. She practiced humility and self-denial while offering her sufferings to God for the conversion of sinners and the good of the Church. Her holiness and compassion made her widely admired even during her lifetime.
In 1671, she became the first canonized saint of the Americas. Today, St. Rose of Lima is the patron saint of Peru, Latin America, the Philippines, florists, gardeners, and those who work to serve people in need. Her feast day is celebrated on August 30.
