About St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was born on August 29, 1769, in Grenoble, France. From an early age, she desired to dedicate her life entirely to God. She entered the Society of the Sacred Heart, where she became known for her deep prayer life and passion for missionary work.
In 1818, she traveled to the United States as one of the first Religious of the Sacred Heart missionaries to America. Despite many hardships, including poverty, illness, language barriers, and difficult living conditions, she established schools for children and worked tirelessly to spread the Catholic faith throughout the frontier.
St. Rose had a special desire to serve the Native American peoples. Later in life, she spent time among the Potawatomi, who affectionately called her “The Woman Who Prays” because of the many hours she spent in silent prayer before God.
She died on November 18, 1852, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Her feast day is celebrated each year on November 18.
