About St. Thomas More
St. Thomas More (1478–1535) was an English lawyer, scholar, husband, father, author, and statesman. He served as Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII and was widely respected for his wisdom, honesty, and deep Catholic faith.
When King Henry VIII declared himself the head of the Church in England, St. Thomas More refused to support the break with the Catholic Church or recognize the king’s unlawful claims. Guided by his conscience and unwavering loyalty to Christ, he remained faithful to the Pope and the teachings of the Church.
For his refusal, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually sentenced to death. Before his execution on July 6, 1535, he declared:
“I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”
His courageous witness has inspired Catholics for centuries to remain faithful to God above all earthly authority.
Pope Pius XI canonized St. Thomas More in 1935, and Pope St. John Paul II later proclaimed him the Patron Saint of Statesmen and Politicians.
His feast day is celebrated on June 22, together with St. John Fisher.
Who Was Saint Thomas More?
Saint Thomas More was born in London, England, in 1478. He received an excellent education and became one of the most respected lawyers and intellectuals of his time.
He served King Henry VIII as Lord Chancellor, one of the highest offices in England. Despite his important position, Thomas More remained deeply devoted to prayer, family life, and the Catholic faith.
When King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church in England, Thomas More refused to approve the king’s actions because they violated his conscience and the authority of the Pope.
Because of his fidelity to the truth, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
