About the Sacred Heart of Jesus
While love for the Heart of Jesus has always been present in the life of the Church—especially through meditation on His Passion—the formal devotion to the Sacred Heart began to take shape in the 17th century through the revelations given by Jesus Himself to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun.
Between 1673 and 1675, Saint Margaret Mary received a series of mystical visions at her convent in Paray-le-Monial, France. In these apparitions, Jesus showed her His Heart, burning with love and surrounded by a crown of thorns. He expressed sorrow that His love was met with indifference and rejection, especially in the Eucharist.
He told her:
“Behold this Heart which has so loved men… but in return I receive ingratitude and indifference.”
Jesus asked that a feast be established in honor of His Sacred Heart, to be celebrated on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi. He also requested reparation for sins, frequent reception of Holy Communion, especially on First Fridays, and an hour of Eucharistic adoration, known today as the Holy Hour.
Though the devotion faced skepticism at first, it gained approval and grew rapidly—especially after the support of St. Claude de la Colombière, a Jesuit priest and Margaret Mary’s spiritual director, who confirmed the authenticity of her visions and spread the devotion.
In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church, affirming the message Jesus entrusted to Saint Margaret Mary.
In June 1889, Leo XIII raised the feast to the dignity of the first class.
