Saint of the Day: St. Cyril of Alexandria

(June 27, 2025)

Feast Day: June 27
Patron of: Theologians, catechists, and those defending the faith

Short Biography:

St. Cyril of Alexandria (c. 376–444) served as Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 until his death. Renowned for his profound theological insight, he was a staunch defender of the doctrine that Mary is truly Theotokos (“God–bearer”), affirming Christ’s full divinity at the Council of Ephesus in 431. His writings against Nestorianism helped safeguard the Church’s understanding of the Incarnation. Cyril was also celebrated for his pastoral zeal, caring tenderly for the poor and orphaned in his see.

Prayer:

O God, who gave to St. Cyril of Alexandria the gift of rightly dividing Your word and defending the mystery of the Incarnation, grant us, through his intercession, a firm faith in Christ our Lord, true God and true man. Amen.
