Bishops and Doctors of the Church
Short Biography:
On January 2, the Church honors Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory Nazianzen, two close friends whose lives shaped the early Church in profound ways. Both lived in the 4th century and are remembered as great bishops, theologians, and defenders of the true faith.
Saint Basil served as Bishop of Caesarea and worked tirelessly to protect the Church from false teachings. He was known for his love of the poor and established hospitals, shelters, and charitable institutions. His writings on the Holy Spirit remain foundational to Catholic doctrine.
Saint Gregory Nazianzen, often called “the Theologian,” was renowned for his deep understanding of the mystery of the Trinity. Though he preferred a quiet life of prayer, he accepted leadership roles out of obedience to God and service to the Church.
Together, these saints show us the power of friendship rooted in Christ, courage in defending the truth, and love expressed through service.
